Join the Band

Instrument Selection Process:
In Waller, we test every single 5th grader on all the different instruments each year in early January by going to their elementary schools and having a ‘testing day’. It is a ton of fun for us and the students! We then gather information on their natural aptitude for each instrument and what their favorite one would be if they were to join band. If they choose band (which we hope they do!) we then place them on one that matches their natural aptitude and their top choice. We then send out mailers in April with which instrument they will play!!

Materials and Supplies for the Fall:
In the mailers we send home are the exact instruments and supplies that we prefer each student to have when they enter SJH the next year. We have Instrument Drives every April for parents and students to come out, meet the directors, ask questions and to secure their instruments. These drives are an excellent way for future band members to come and see what the SJH Band program is about. It also saves the hassle of having to go to these vendors on your own, but rather they are coming to you. Most importantly, it sets your student up for great success whenever they start band in August.
If your child needs an instrument for the upcoming year, please attend our next Instrument Drive on Thursday, August 25. It will take place at the Waller High School Cafeteria from 5-8pm.

Why Choose Band?
There are many fantastic reasons why a student should choose band. Band is a fun way to learn how to play an instrument, make new friends, and get involved in a new school! Not to mention all of the cool pep-rallies, football games, fun parties, and trips that we take each year for becoming a member. However, if you’re still unconvinced that band may be the choice for you, here are some facts that prove music is the best option out there!
  1. Musically trained students score higher on standardized tests like the STAAR and SAT. Band students score an average of 66 points higher on their SAT than non-band students
  2. 96% of American astronauts studied the fine arts in school, including Neil Armstrong who played the euphonium!
  3. Admission criteria into most major universities recommend participation in an extracurricular activity through senior year of high school.
  4. A study done by the Royal Conservatory showed that students involved in music had better language abilities, increased emotional resilience, increased attention span and focus, and increased self-confidence!
  5. One decade-long U.S. study found that students who participated in at least nine hours of arts education a week (including music study) were four times more likely than their peers to have won recognition for their academic achievement, and three times more likely to have won an award for school attendance.
  6. Music speeds the development of reading and speech skills and trains children to focus their attention for extended periods.
